iLoveTypography.com Beginning Font Creation

I Love Typography has a great two-part article for the would-be font designers out there. The first article begins with some suggested software for designing fonts (FontForge is free!) and moves the reader through basic ideation processes (hand sketches, tablet-drawing). The second article gives a brief overview of some font design basics - kerning, vertical metrics, and horizontal metrics. This is a great introduction, and I Love Typography has some suggested reading in the sidebar for further investigation.

Fonts for Every Occasion

Smashingmagazine.com is great at doing extensive research on various aspects of design and them boiling the whole thing down into a brief article accompanied by a list of helpful resources / suggestions / bon mots... and they've done it again.

80 Beautiful Typefaces For Professional Design tackles a problem that designers confront again and again when asked to choose appropriate typefaces for a particular design need from the endless sea of options available. They (after exhaustive research) chose 80 "bulletproof" fonts that can be considered effective starting places for every corporate design. Within you'll find some old stand-bys (your Helveticas, Myriads, and Palatinos) and some newcomers on the block (Houschka, Insider, Wingardium... Seriously?)

Enjoy.
